Drivers tailgating each other is a massive problem on U.S. roads. The reason it is so dangerous is the closer someone is to the vehicle in front, the less time they have to react when the front driver does something.
So what can you do if someone is driving too close behind your vehicle?
Look for a safe escape
The driver might be too close because they don’t understand what the appropriate distance is. Or it could be because they are not paying attention. Alternatively, it could be they are doing it intentionally out of aggression or anger. Regardless, it is best to find a safe method of getting out of their way.
If you are not already in the furthest right lane, moving across to it can allow the driver to pass you and go on their way. Things can be more difficult if there is only one lane in your direction of travel. One option might be to pull over where safe to do so, making sure to indicate with plenty of warning. Another option might be to take a turnoff just to get out of the tailgater’s way. Do take care if you think they are tailgating out of aggression, as tailgaters have been known to follow and attack drivers who pull off or over.
Don’t escalate the situation
One thing you must never do is signal to the driver as you cannot predict how they will interpret your signal. Certainly don’t dab your brakes either, as even if they interpret your actions as a polite reminder to pull back, the immediate consequence will be for your vehicle to slow slightly, bringing the two vehicles closer and making a crash more likely.
If a collision occurs, it may seem logical that they will be found at fault because they were tailgating. However, you can never be sure, so it’s wise to seek legal guidance to give yourself the best chance of getting the compensation you are due.
