What to after a motorcycle accident

On Behalf of | Nov 23, 2020 | Motorcycle Accidents |

For bikers in Eastern Pennsylvania, motorcycle riding is an expression of freedom. Feeling the wind against your face as you cruise down the open road is an experience without parallel.

Unfortunately, like with other recreational activities, there are risks as well. Motorcycles contribute disproportionately to traffic fatalities every year. In fact, 2018 saw nearly 5,000 people killed in motorcycle accidents.

For those that survive, many are left with serious injuries and mental trauma. Of course, more needs to be done in terms of prevention but, from the rider’s perspective, perhaps equally as important is knowing what to do after an accident.

The steps taken after a crash, especially a serious one, can make the journey back to normal that much easier.

Here are three things every motorcycle rider should do following an accident.

Call the Police

It may be tempting to not get the police involved. But it’s important to have law enforcement present.

Police officers help get things under control. The scene of an accident can be chaotic; people may be hurt and in need of care and traffic may need to be redirected. An officer’s presence helps stabilize the location.

See a Doctor

Even if there are no indicators of serious injury present, it’s important to be examined by a doctor. Injuries, even serious injuries, may go unnoticed for days or even weeks. A doctor can detect latent injuries and begin administering treatment right away.

Call a Lawyer

Talking to a lawyer is not the same thing as filing a lawsuit. Even if you don’t anticipate suing, having a lawyer evaluate your case early ensures you’re prepared in the even your situation changes.

An experienced motorcycle accident lawyer can offer candid advice, provide options, craft a strategy that prioritizes client objectives if it’s determined legal action is the best path forward.
