2 reasons a semi-truck may cause a rear-end accident

On Behalf of | Jun 10, 2024 | Car Accidents |

When another vehicle gets rear-ended by a semi-truck, it is those in the smaller vehicle that have the greatest odds of facing serious injury. In many cases, the driver of the semi-truck will be protected by the height and weight of their vehicle, and they will suffer minor injuries or none at all. Those in the smaller vehicle, however, could suffer major injuries or even pass away.

In these rear-end accident cases, there’s often nothing the front driver can do to avoid the accident, even if they see it coming. So why is it that semi-trucks cause these crashes? Below are two potential reasons.

Long stopping distances

For one thing, a semi-truck is always going to have a longer stopping distance than a passenger car. It may be nearly twice as long. This is why things like driver distraction or driver fatigue are such big issues. If anything delays the driver’s reaction time, they may find that there is no longer enough space to stop the truck – and a rear-end accident is inevitable.

Poor maintenance and upkeep

In some cases, though, it is not the driver’s fault that they can’t avoid the accident. Perhaps the vehicle itself hasn’t been maintained properly, upkeep hasn’t been carried out and repairs haven’t been made. That driver presses the brakes and they suddenly give out. The driver could easily have stopped in time under normal conditions, but their defective vehicle could still cause an accident. The trucking company or the maintenance company may be responsible.

If you have been injured in one of these accidents, take the time to look into all of your options to seek financial compensation.
